Port Washington Youth Climate Summit 2019

“We wanted to show how our Youth Climate Summit impacted students and our community over time. Margaret  brilliantly captured the transformation that occurred over a year as students learned, collaborated and acted for the planet.”

Mindy Germain

Executive Director, Residents Forward

Residents Forward, a community-development and environmental organization in Port Washington, New York, held the first ever youth climate conference on Long Island. Residents Forward asked me to make a promotional video to help them secure more sponsorship and participants for the next Youth Climate Summit.

I built the promotional video around John Byrne’s inspiring keynote speech, which described the devastating effects human-made climate change has had on our planet and his call for action on the part of all people. My goal was to evoke a strong sense of concern and the personal need to act on the part of the viewer.  I think that goal was achieved.  Residents Forward is currently using the video to fundraise and to promote  their work in youth environmental education.

Port Washington World Festival Day 2018

“Margaret Galbraith is embedded in the community she documents, revealing neighbors that she cares about and fights alongside. As the World Festival Coordinator at the Port Washington Public Library, I enjoyed working with Margaret and her attention to the manifold textured cultures of our community.”

The Port Washington Public Library held a World Festival Day to showcase and celebrate the different cultures and nationalities that make up the town of Port Washington, NY.  Representatives from many countries performed dance and music, displayed cultural artifacts, shared local food, and provided historical information about their places of origin.  I was hired to document the festival through photography and videography.  I then edited and produced a photo/video montage of the entire event.  I used my photos and video footage, along with additional photos that were provided by a second photographer, who worked at another location. The finished work wove together actual performances with “live” music and photos to give the event an intimate and authentic feel.
